NEC Corporation Launches Aspire NetZero: AI-Driven Solution to Slash Mobile Network Energy Usage

NEC Corporation, a renowned technology leader, has introduced an innovative solution, Aspire NetZero, through its subsidiary NEC Aspire Technology Limited. Aspire NetZero, an AI-enabled SaaS-based energy reduction solution, has been specifically developed to aid mobile network operators in curbing unnecessary energy consumption within the Radio Access Network (RAN). This pioneering solution is adaptable across diverse mobile operators’ needs and compatible with 3G, 4G, and 5G networks.

The staggering fact, as revealed by GSMA Intelligence, is that mobile RAN accounts for approximately 73% of the total energy consumed by a mobile operator. Energy has consequently emerged as the third largest expense for mobile operators after site rentals and labor costs. The surge in energy expenses, amplified by the advent of 5G, has prompted the need for transformative solutions. GSMA Intelligence’s projections suggest that energy consumption by mobile networks is poised to nearly double between 2020 and 2025 due to the ongoing expansion of 5G.

What sets Aspire NetZero apart is its AI-driven approach. The solution employs AI to analyze and predict network traffic patterns, thereby enabling operators to dynamically allocate resources based on required capacity and performance levels. The result is a significant reduction in power consumption. Aspire NetZero intelligently configures and coordinates vendor features to ensure maximum savings and an enhanced end-user experience.

Beyond its energy-saving capabilities, Aspire NetZero also supports hybrid-powered sites and extends mobile service availability during off-grid periods. The solution is projected to deliver energy savings that are at least three times greater than standard energy reduction vendor features. Depending on network traffic behavior and topology, these savings can increase by up to 10 times.

Declan Friel, CTO of NEC Aspire Technology, emphasized that the solution’s AI-powered capabilities deliver tangible operational savings to operators globally. This development marks a crucial step in addressing the energy challenges associated with the coexistence of 5G alongside existing networks.

Hideyuki Ogata, General Manager of 5G Solution Department at NEC, highlighted the pivotal role of AI-powered solutions like Aspire NetZero in aiding operators to assess energy consumption and optimize network performance. This advancement offers operators an opportunity to enhance network efficiency and generate substantial energy savings through a single comprehensive application.

Network operators can access an online calculator to estimate their potential energy and OPEX savings through Aspire NetZero.
