Indian steel giant Tata Steel has announced a significant collaboration with the Leadership Group for Industry Transition (LeadIT), an initiative jointly formed by the governments of Sweden and India during the UN Climate Action Summit in 2019 and supported by the World Economic Forum. This groundbreaking partnership reflects Tata Steel’s commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions and positions it as a global leader in driving the transformation of heavy industries toward sustainable practices.

Tata Steel has set an ambitious target to achieve carbon neutrality by 2045 and aims to leverage the LeadIT platform to gain insights, best practices, and innovative ideas related to sustainable technologies within the steel sector. By becoming the first Indian steel company to join LeadIT, Tata Steel gains a crucial platform for sharing its experiences, challenges, and successes, with a focus on influencing policies and fostering collaboration.

The company’s Vice President of Technology and R&D, Dr. Debashish Bhattacharjee, highlighted Tata Steel’s adoption of advanced carbon-negative technologies such as Coal Bed Methane (CBM) injection, hydrogen injection in blast furnaces, and the commissioning of a carbon capture plant. These efforts underline Tata Steel’s dedication not only to reducing its own emissions but also to providing climate-smart solutions to its customers, enabling them to meet their own environmental goals.

Rajiv Mangal, Vice President of Safety, Health & Sustainability at Tata Steel, emphasized that sustainability is a fundamental aspect of the company’s business philosophy. Tata Steel’s membership in LeadIT aligns with its ongoing measures to achieve net-zero carbon emissions and underscores its commitment to driving industry-wide sustainable change.

This collaboration with LeadIT accentuates Tata Steel’s industry leadership and showcases its readiness to revolutionize challenging sectors through innovative practices, collaboration, and pioneering thought leadership. The company’s endeavors in embracing green technologies and promoting sustainable practices are expected to contribute significantly to the global steel sector’s journey towards achieving net-zero targets.
