FuelCell Energy and Toyota’s Tri-gen System Paving the Way to Net Zero at Port of Long Beach

In a groundbreaking partnership, FuelCell Energy, Inc. and Toyota Motor North America, Inc. have successfully completed the construction of a pioneering “Tri-gen system” at Toyota’s Port of Long Beach facilities. This innovative system, owned and operated by FuelCell Energy, marks a significant milestone in sustainable energy solutions.

The Tri-gen system is a unique venture that harnesses directed biogas to produce three essential elements: renewable electricity, renewable hydrogen, and water. Under a 20-year purchase agreement, FuelCell Energy will supply these products to Toyota, demonstrating its commitment to renewable energy. This initiative aligns with Toyota’s environmental sustainability strategy and reflects their determination to reduce carbon emissions on a global scale.

The Tri-gen system represents FuelCell Energy’s ability to scale hydrogen-powered fuel cell technology, a pivotal solution in the ongoing effort to combat climate change. Toyota Logistic Services (TLS) Long Beach will become the world’s first port vehicle processing facility entirely powered by onsite-generated, 100% renewable energy. This remarkable achievement exemplifies Toyota’s dedication to innovation and sustainability.

Chris Reynolds, Chief Administrative Officer at Toyota, emphasized the significance of this milestone, highlighting the potential for replication in various parts of the world. Tri-gen’s reliance on renewable hydrogen and electricity production will not only bolster Toyota’s carbon reduction goals but also serve as a model for environmentally conscious practices in the industry.

FuelCell Energy’s CEO, Jason Few, expressed pride in their collaboration with Toyota and the positive impact it will have on business, communities, and the environment. The Tri-gen system employs fuel cell technology to efficiently convert renewable biogas into electricity, hydrogen, and usable water, emitting virtually no air pollutants in the process.

By supporting TLS operations at the Port of Long Beach, Tri-gen is expected to annually reduce over 9,000 tons of CO₂ emissions from the power grid, making a significant contribution to environmental sustainability. Port of Long Beach CEO Mario Cordero lauded the use of renewable hydrogen as a vital element in achieving zero emissions for various equipment used in the shipping industry. This project represents a crucial step forward in the transition toward a more sustainable and eco-friendly future.
