In a significant development for India’s maritime industry, Director General of Shipping, Shyam Jagannathan, unveiled the National Action Plan for Green Shipping, aimed at fostering eco-friendly practices and providing incentives for low-emission ships. He delivered this pivotal announcement during his keynote address at the 13th edition of INMEX SMM India 2023, South Asia’s largest maritime exhibition and conference.

Jagannathan emphasized that this ambitious plan is set to position India’s maritime sector for a prosperous and environmentally responsible future. The plan is a proactive step towards addressing environmental concerns in the shipping industry and aligns with global efforts to reduce emissions in the maritime sector.

India’s maritime vision, as outlined by Jagannathan, extends beyond environmental sustainability. It encompasses quadrupling port capacity, establishing clean energy fuel hubs, promoting cruise tourism growth, fostering shipbuilding and recycling leadership, and creating a comprehensive 5,000 km regional waterway grid. These initiatives are geared towards not only bolstering the industry’s economic prospects but also ensuring its long-term viability.

Furthermore, Jagannathan highlighted several recent achievements in the sector, including the doubling of major ports’ capacity, significant growth in waterway transportation, an increase in cruise passengers and seafarers, expanded adoption of solar power, and the development of lighthouse tourism. These accomplishments have been made possible through transformative reforms such as Sagarmala and digitization initiatives.

The focus on sustainability is evident through the Swachh Sagar Portal, a platform dedicated to environmental data. With the unveiling of the National Action Plan for Green Shipping and the overarching vision for India’s maritime sector, it is clear that the nation is taking proactive steps towards a greener, more prosperous, and technologically advanced future for its maritime industry. The INMEX SMM India 2023 conference will delve into various critical issues facing the industry, including green shipping and digitalization.
